I live in a typical Chinese family in Asia, all members have
obligations in the family. My dad and mum are both working and earning, paying
my school and will pay my postsecondary education, basically, they are the
bank, provide wealth and everything we need. My grandmother and grandfather prepare
meals, look after me when I stay at home and wash the dishes (they just put
them in the dish-washing machine, not cleaning the dishes by themselves), they
are the people who enjoy everything; after defining their obligations, I need
to start thinking about my obligations, I think that is studying hard, bring
them and myself a good future, so I need to work hard. In Asia, the education
is very strict, studying take most part of our time, the parents also care
about our grades; we will have many tests and the ranking list would be posted,
it’s very stressful; this topic is related with self-enhancement; When I was in
middle school, I went to a very good class and competitions are everywhere. Our
tests’ grades and class averages would be sent to our parents through our
system, a bad mark would be considered a big deal but never a mistake from the
teacher. After I came to Canada, students have more privacy and spent more
times on activities, but there are still competitions, which is the difference
between western culture and Asian culture.
