How does Aggression relate to me?

Aggression happens every day in our life, the aggression between teachers and students, boss and workers, Parents and kids, and even between two animals. I seldom have conflict and cause arguments with my residence friends; I think it’s boring and useless. My grandfather is interested in political and military aggression, political news are his favorite, so sometimes I would watch with him, I found when two countries have a same goal and refuse to make a concession, the aggression would start. I consider it as a human’s natural behavior; after reading this chapter, Edwin Sutherland’s theory of differential association explains that aggression and violence are learned behavior. Aggression can lead to bullying; In my memory, I’ve never had physical bullying, but when I was in primary school, sometimes people would give me bad names and I was very upset about it. Social bullying is very normal among the teenagers, I think it really hurts that person’s feeling and gave him/her bad memories. Cyber bullying happens every day, we thought making fun of the people online is not a big deal, but actually, many teenagers were suicide because of cyber bullying, how could we like it?
Aggression is a normal behavior and can be avoided, I think we should calm down when we are angry, incase to do some bad things to others.

How does family roles related to me?

I live in a typical Chinese family in Asia, all members have obligations in the family. My dad and mum are both working and earning, paying my school and will pay my postsecondary education, basically, they are the bank, provide wealth and everything we need. My grandmother and grandfather prepare meals, look after me when I stay at home and wash the dishes (they just put them in the dish-washing machine, not cleaning the dishes by themselves), they are the people who enjoy everything; after defining their obligations, I need to start thinking about my obligations, I think that is studying hard, bring them and myself a good future, so I need to work hard. In Asia, the education is very strict, studying take most part of our time, the parents also care about our grades; we will have many tests and the ranking list would be posted, it’s very stressful; this topic is related with self-enhancement; When I was in middle school, I went to a very good class and competitions are everywhere. Our tests’ grades and class averages would be sent to our parents through our system, a bad mark would be considered a big deal but never a mistake from the teacher. After I came to Canada, students have more privacy and spent more times on activities, but there are still competitions, which is the difference between western culture and Asian culture.

  • Self-concept in western and East Asian families:

  • ·         East Asians and Westerners tend to view themselves differently, and those differences have an important effect on family roles.

  • ·         In both cultures, people perceive themselves positively.

  • ·         Self-enhancement: the belief that you are more competent and generally better than your actions and behavior indicate. It’s closely tied to a person’s family roles and obligations.

  • ·         Westerners tend to see themselves more positively than they really are. (ex: A bad mark on a school assignment be considered a minor mistake, the teacher’s fault, or a case of bad luck)

  • ·         In Asian cultures, the concept of shame would strongly motivate you to try to avoid getting a bad mark in the first place.

How does body language relate to me?

After learning this chapter, I am surprised at the different body languages have different meanings in different cultures, even smiling. I think there are some body languages came from human nature, which is not distinguished by the cultures, liked baby crying means they are hungry and unhappy, when they smile, it means they are happy and  comfortable. Some body languages were influenced and learnt; for example, when I met my friends, we would hug and smiled; In France, they hugged and kissed the faces; I think these greeting body languages depends on the degree of intimacy and friendship with the others. Some body languages were shown unconsciously, sometimes I would express my feelings through the body languages unconsciously, my friends would tell me; after that time, I sometimes would observe other’s body languages.
